Gris Mineral Paint

Gris Mineral Paint launches with an entirely monochrome paint concept. The collection’s 15 colour series is influenced by the Nordic aesthetic of cloudy whites, concrete greys of Brutalist architecture and deep smokey, inky colours of Japanese textile dyes. The company is founded by make up artist Liz Michael, who applies her minimal approach to colour to a whole new discipline. She describes her fascination with mineral paint:

“The first time I saw a space painted with sol-silicate mineral paint it took my breath away. It seemed that the paint had become part of the wall, almost as if it were dyed. It had the most unique texture, very matte, almost velvety look to it, yet at the same time, deeply rich, vibrant and light reflective.”

Gris is produced in the UK by Keim, the world leaders in fine mineral paint. The history of mineral paint dates back to over a century yet is currently experiencing a renaissance in contemporary interiors due to it’s unique quality. It is ultra matte and made of purely natural pigments without chemical components or preservatives, making it a completely sustainable product. It bonds with the underlying mineral substrate, resulting in a material-like tactility, depth of colour and exceptional colour fastness.

The name Gris, the French word for grey, reflects the exclusively monochrome palette. The design concept is informed by this central idea as well as the minimal aesthetic. It was important to achieve a premium quality, a sense of craftsmanship as well as a physical tactility with all applications. The graphic identity, packaging, print material and website was designed to appeal to a nichéd audience of designers and architects as well as individuals with a refined sense for detail.

In keeping with the sustainable nature of the product, the black paint canisters are made of 100% recycled plastic. The labels are custom printed with hot foil stamping and each shade is individually numbered. The packaging is designed for tactile appeal in store as well as visibility online. Hand painted colour swatches are packaged in a custom sample box available to designers and architects when selecting the right shade. All print material is handcrafted with letterpress printing on fine Gmund paper.

As the main portal for the brand, the Gris Mineral Paint webshop was designed to translate the brand’s minimal aesthetic through all digital platforms for optimal customer experience. The UK based brand launched August 2019 and is currently sold exclusively online.
